What Is a Waterproof Jacket Zipper?

Waterproof jacket zippers are coated zipper systems designed to help reduce direct water entry along the zipper line. They are used in jackets, coats, parkas, rainwear, softshell garments, outdoor clothing, equipment bags, technical cases and selected textile accessories.

These products may also be searched as water-repellent zippers, water-resistant zippers, TPU-coated zippers, Aquaguard zippers or coated outdoor zippers. In practical use, the zipper helps reduce water penetration along the closure line, but it does not automatically make the complete jacket, bag or technical product fully waterproof.

The final water performance of a product depends on its shell fabric, seams, needle holes, seam tape, zipper flap, lining, end finishing, closure direction and the complete product construction. A water-repellent zipper should be treated as one important part of a full weather-protection system.

Browse Jacket and Coat Zipper to compare outerwear zipper constructions. For this product group, see Waterproof Jacket Zippers.

Where Are Waterproof and Water-Repellent Zippers Used?

  • Jackets and coats: For front closures on weather-exposed outerwear and technical garments.
  • Parkas and long coats: For longer front openings that benefit from reduced direct water entry along the zipper line.
  • Rainwear and softshell: For garments exposed to rain, wind, splash and outdoor conditions.
  • Outdoor apparel: For hiking jackets, camping garments, cycling outerwear, fishing clothing and active-use textiles.
  • Bags and cases: For outdoor bags, sports bags, equipment cases, storage covers and weather-exposed compartments.
  • Technical textiles: For protective covers, transport cases, equipment pouches and specialised textile products.

Does a Waterproof Zipper Make the Entire Product Waterproof?

No. A coated zipper can help reduce direct water entry through the zipper line, but water can still enter through seams, stitch holes, unsealed fabric edges, zipper ends and other construction points.

For strong weather protection, the zipper must work together with suitable shell fabric, sealed seams, appropriate stitch construction, flap design, lining and the intended exposure level. A coated zipper is a useful technical component, but it is not a complete waterproofing system by itself.

Open-End, Close-End, O Zipper and Two-Way Systems

The zipper end type is one of the most important selection criteria. The same water-repellent construction can be supplied as an open-end zipper, a close-end zipper, an O zipper or a two-way/combi zipper. These structures serve different functions and should not be used interchangeably.

Zipper End Type Typical Applications Main Function
Open-End / Separating Jackets, coats, parkas, rainwear, vests and front-opening outerwear Allows both zipper tapes to detach completely at the lower end.
Close-End Pockets, bags, pouches, organisers, equipment cases and fixed closure areas The lower end stays connected and the zipper does not separate fully.
O Zipper Curved openings, wraparound access, pet products, carrying bags and specialised textile designs Supports closure lines that are not simple straight openings.
Two-Way / Combi Long coats, parkas, softshell garments and technical outerwear Provides standard upper opening plus controlled lower opening for movement and access.

Open-End Water-Repellent Jacket Zippers

Open-end separating water-repellent zippers are used when a jacket, coat, parka, vest or rainwear garment needs to open fully at the front. The lower end includes a starter box and insertion pin, allowing both zipper tapes to separate when opened completely.

This zipper construction is required for a front-opening jacket or coat. A close-end zipper cannot replace it because its lower end remains permanently connected.

The 40 cm / 15.75 in #5 Water-Repellent Jacket Zipper – Open End / Separating is an example of an outerwear zipper suitable for short jackets, vests, children’s outerwear and compatible front-opening garment designs.

Close-End Water-Repellent Zippers

Close-end water-repellent zippers are used for fixed closure areas where the lower end should remain permanently connected. They can be used for pockets, bag compartments, pouches, organisers, equipment cases and selected short technical-textile closures.

A close-end zipper should not be selected for the front of a jacket or coat that must open fully. For that use, choose an open-end separating zipper instead.

O Zippers and Two-Way Combi Zippers

O zippers are used where the closure line follows a curved, wraparound or special-shape opening rather than a standard straight line. They can be relevant for pet garments, carrying bags, equipment covers and specialised textile designs.

Two-way or combi zippers use more than one slider to create flexible opening control. They are useful in long coats, parkas, softshell jackets and technical garments where opening the lower section improves sitting comfort, walking movement or access to inner layers.

A two-way zipper is not necessary for every product. For a short jacket, standard pocket or compact bag compartment, a single-slider system may be the more practical choice.

How to Choose Water-Repellent Zipper Size

The category includes #3 and #5 zipper options, depending on the product. Zipper size influences tooth visibility, zipper bulk, opening strength, garment balance and the visual weight of the closure line.

Zipper Size General Direction What to Check
#3 Shorter or lighter fixed closure applications Fabric weight, required opening length, close-end construction and expected use frequency
#5 Jackets, parkas, rainwear, outerwear, bags and more visible technical closure lines End type, zipper length, slider configuration, garment construction and exposure to weather

A larger zipper size is not automatically the correct choice. A bulky zipper can look too heavy on lightweight fabric, while a lighter zipper may not provide the required appearance or closure balance on thicker outerwear. Choose according to the full product construction.

How to Choose the Correct Zipper Length

Measure the actual closure line rather than the total length of the jacket, garment or bag. When replacing a zipper, close it and measure from the top stop to the lower separating component or bottom stop. For new production, measure the zipper placement line in the pattern.

  • Short lengths: Pockets, bags, pouches, organisers, cases and short fixed closure areas.
  • Medium lengths: Short jackets, vests, rainwear tops and standard outerwear applications.
  • Long lengths: Parkas, long coats, long jackets, long rainwear and extended front-opening garments.

A zipper that is too short may leave the opening incomplete or reduce wearability. A zipper that is too long can create fitting issues at the neckline, hem or lower front construction. Test the selected zipper against the real pattern before bulk production.

Water-Repellent Zipper vs. Nylon Coil Zipper

A standard nylon coil zipper is generally used for everyday garment and accessory closures. A water-repellent zipper adds a coated or protected surface intended to help reduce water entry along the zipper line.

Choose a standard nylon zipper when flexibility, lighter construction and general closure use are the main priorities. Choose a water-repellent zipper when the closure line will be exposed to rain, splash, moisture or outdoor conditions and the product needs added surface protection.

Water-Repellent Zipper vs. Chunky Plastic Zipper

Chunky plastic zippers use visible, structured molded teeth and are often selected when the zipper should create a stronger outerwear appearance. Water-repellent zippers focus on reducing direct water entry through the zipper line.

For a visible structured tooth effect, a chunky plastic zipper can be a suitable choice. For rainwear, technical jackets, softshell garments and weather-exposed outerwear, a coated water-repellent zipper may be more appropriate.

Why Slider Type Matters

The slider controls how the zipper opens and closes. Single-slider constructions are suitable for standard front closures, pockets and accessory compartments. O zipper and two-way/combi systems provide more flexible access for specialised products and longer garments.

Choose the slider arrangement according to product use. A two-way system can be useful on a long parka, while it may be unnecessary for a short pocket, pouch or compact bag compartment.

How to Sew a Water-Repellent Zipper

Coated zippers should be installed without unnecessarily stretching, twisting or forcing the zipper tape into an unsuitable seam line. Uneven installation can affect the appearance of the coated surface and make slider movement less smooth.

  • Mark the closure line on the pattern before sewing.
  • Place the zipper tape evenly without over-stretching it.
  • Check slider travel before final stitching.
  • Confirm the direction of the starter box and insertion pin on open-end zippers.
  • Plan the lower-end finish according to garment load and intended use.
  • Test the zipper with the actual shell fabric, lining and seam construction before production.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Water-Repellent Zippers

  • Assuming that a coated zipper makes the entire garment or bag waterproof.
  • Using a close-end zipper for a jacket or coat front that must open fully.
  • Choosing zipper length from total garment length instead of the actual closure line.
  • Using a two-way or combi system where the product does not need lower-opening adjustment.
  • Selecting zipper size without considering fabric thickness and intended use.
  • Stretching or forcing the coated zipper tape during installation.
  • Ignoring slider access, lower-hem movement and the real product construction.
  • Starting production without testing the zipper on the actual fabric, lining and seam structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a waterproof jacket zipper?

A waterproof jacket zipper is a coated zipper designed to help reduce direct water entry along the zipper line. It can be used in jackets, parkas, rainwear, softshell garments, bags and technical textile products.

Does a waterproof zipper make a jacket fully waterproof?

No. A coated zipper can help reduce direct water entry along the closure line, but total waterproof performance also depends on fabric, seams, stitch holes, seam tape, zipper ends and complete product construction.

Should I choose an open-end or close-end zipper for a jacket?

Choose an open-end separating zipper for a jacket, coat, parka or vest front that needs to open fully. Choose a close-end zipper for pockets, bags, pouches, organisers and other fixed closure areas.

What is a two-way or combi zipper?

A two-way or combi zipper uses more than one slider. The main slider closes the garment normally, while the second slider can open the lower section to improve movement, sitting comfort or access.

When should I use an O zipper?

Use an O zipper when the closure line is curved, wraparound or follows a special shape rather than a standard straight opening. It can suit pet products, carrying bags, equipment covers and specialised textile designs.

What is the difference between #3 and #5 water-repellent zippers?

#3 options are generally more suitable for lighter or shorter fixed closure applications. #5 options can suit jackets, rainwear, parkas, outerwear, technical bags and more visible closure lines. The final choice should consider fabric thickness, end type, zipper length and intended use.

Can water-repellent zippers be used in bags?

Yes. They can be used in sports bags, outdoor bags, equipment covers, pouches, cases and technical compartments when the zipper length, end type, slider system and expected load are suitable.

Can I sew a water-repellent zipper like a standard zipper?

The installation principles are similar, but coated zipper tape should not be unnecessarily stretched, twisted or forced into an unsuitable seam line. Test the zipper with the final fabric and lining before production.
