Cord Locks and Drawstring Stoppers

Cord locks and drawstring stoppers are adjustable textile components used to control the working length or gathering of cords, drawstrings, laces and compatible round elastic. They create a reusable adjustment point on hoodies, waistbands, jackets, bags, footwear and gathered textile products.

The E-Buttons collection includes zinc-alloy metal cord locks and plastic or acetal cord locks with single-hole, double-hole, top-push, side-operated, round-entry and rectangular-entry structures.

Do not select by the stated metric or inch opening alone. Check the actual and lightly compressed cord dimensions, surface friction, passage arrangement, spring mechanism and component weight on the finished product.

What Is a Cord Lock or Drawstring Stopper?

A cord lock or drawstring stopper is an adjustable component used to control the movement of a cord, lace, string or compatible round elastic. Pressing the operating button releases or aligns the cord passage. The cord can then be moved to the required position. Releasing the button allows the mechanism to apply pressure and help retain the selected adjustment.

Cord locks provide fast, reusable adjustment on hood openings, waist drawstrings, bag closures, footwear lacing systems, headwear and other gathered textile products.

A cord lock does not finish the cut end of a drawstring. Use cord ends and drawstring tips for the terminal sections. Both component types may be used together on one cord assembly.

Metal Cord Locks

Metal cord locks are zinc-alloy components available in single-hole, double-hole, round, oval, flat, small, elongated, cube and other decorative body forms.

Metal cord locks may be selected where the adjusting component is intended to remain visible as part of the design. Component weight and surface contact should be tested on fine fabrics, lightweight hoods and delicate products.

Plastic Cord Locks

Plastic cord locks are lightweight adjusters made from plastic or acetal, depending on the model. Single- and double-hole, round, flat, elongated, crescent, mine-shaped and model-specific structures are available.

A plastic body does not prove that the internal spring, colour treatment or complete component is suitable for every washing temperature or outdoor environment.

Single-Hole and Double-Hole Cord Locks

A single-hole cord lock provides one shared passage and is normally used with one cord. Two fine ends may be used together only where their combined compressed dimensions remain compatible with the channel.

A double-hole cord lock keeps two cord ends in separate passages. This arrangement can help maintain parallel routing on hood, waistband and bag applications.

A double-hole model is not automatically stronger than a single-hole model. Holding performance depends on cord size, surface friction, spring pressure and internal passage geometry.

Cord-Lock StructureCord ArrangementSelection Note
Single holeOne shared passageFor one cord or compatible fine ends using one route
Double holeTwo independent passagesFor keeping two ends separate and parallel
Single-button double holeBoth passages are released by one buttonFor adjusting both ends simultaneously
Bridge or side-operated modelCord and operating direction vary by designButton access and operating comfort must be tested after installation

Top-Push and Side-Operated Models

On a top-push cord lock, the operating button is located on the upper part of the body. Pressing it aligns or releases the internal passages so that the cord can move.

On a side-operated or bridge model, the operating direction and cord route depend on the body construction. Check the installed orientation, access to the button and whether the cord can move without excessive bending.

How Does a Cord Lock Hold the Cord?

On a spring-loaded cord lock, the cord passes through openings in the body and moving button. Releasing the button moves the openings away from full alignment, pressing the cord between internal surfaces and restricting movement.

Holding performance depends on:

  • Actual cord thickness relative to the passage
  • Cord surface friction
  • Soft, filled, rigid or elastic cord construction
  • Spring pressure and button travel
  • Round or rectangular internal geometry
  • Direction and level of applied pulling force

How to Measure Cord Compatibility

The opening stated in a product title is the nominal internal passage. It does not guarantee compatibility with every cord carrying the same stated diameter.

MeasurementWhy It MattersHow to Check It
Outside round-cord diameterDetermines whether the cord can pass through the channel.Measure several points with a caliper without flattening the cord.
Lightly compressed diameterShows how much a soft cord narrows under spring pressure.Record it together with the normal measurement.
Flat-drawstring widthMust correspond with the horizontal size of a rectangular channel.Measure the widest section.
Flat-drawstring thicknessAffects channel height and complete mechanism closure.Measure any folded or joined section separately.
Cord surfaceA very smooth surface may slip after locking.Complete a pull test in the actual operating direction.
Cord rigidityA rigid cord may prevent complete button closure.Confirm free button movement with the cord installed.

Common Cord-Entry Groups

Imperial values below are approximate reference conversions. Use the verified individual product measurements for final selection.

3–3.5 mm / 0.12–0.14 inFine cords and small accessoriesConfirm sufficient friction after locking.
4–4.5 mm / 0.16–0.18 inHood cords, garments and lightweight bagsCheck braid density, surface and compressed diameter.
5–5.5 mm / 0.20–0.22 inHoodies, tracksuits and medium-weight bag cordsConfirm that the cord does not slip after locking.
6–7 mm / 0.24–0.28 inThicker laces, filled cords and selected round elasticConfirm that cord rigidity does not overload the button.
Round entries up to 9 mm / 0.35 inThick cords and model-specific applicationsEvaluate body scale and holding performance together.
6 × 3 mm / 0.24 × 0.12 in, 6 × 3.5 mm / 0.24 × 0.14 in and 7 × 3 mm / 0.28 × 0.12 inFine flat or oval drawstringsMeasure width and thickness separately.
8 × 4 mm / 0.31 × 0.16 in, 8 × 4.5 mm / 0.31 × 0.18 in and 10 × 3.5 mm / 0.39 × 0.14 inWider flat drawstrings and compatible narrow elasticConfirm free movement and secure locking.

This table is a general selection guide and does not guarantee compatibility. Manufacturing tolerance, braid structure, filling and cord surface may change the result.

A plated zinc-alloy cord lock is not automatically stainless or suitable for saltwater exposure. A plastic body also does not prove that the internal spring and other parts are plastic.

Real-World Applications

  • Hoodie, coat and jacket adjustment cords
  • Tracksuit, shorts and sportswear waist drawstrings
  • Bag, backpack, pouch and drawstring-sack closures
  • Shoe, boot and trainer laces
  • Adjustment cords on hats, headwear and neck warmers
  • Sleeping bags and compatible camping textiles
  • Curtain, cover and home-textile gathering systems
  • Adjustment points using compatible round elastic

Not every model is suitable for every application. Final approval must be based on the verified dimensions, material, colour, body structure and mechanism information on the individual product page.

How Is a Cord Lock Installed?

  1. Measure the normal and lightly compressed cord dimensions.
  2. Press the operating button to align the passages.
  3. Thread the cord through the correct passage.
  4. On a double-hole model, place the two ends in separate channels.
  5. Release the button so that the mechanism engages the cord.
  6. Pull in the actual operating direction to test slipping.
  7. Fit any terminal cord ends after completing the cord route.

Standard spring-loaded cord locks are normally installed by hand and do not require a press or setting die. A separate tool may be required for the terminal cord end.

Incorrect Selection and Use Warnings

  • A cord that is too narrow may slip after locking.
  • A cord that is too thick may not pass through or may prevent complete button closure.
  • Measure both width and thickness when using a flat drawstring.
  • Check the compressed diameter of soft and filled cords.
  • A very smooth cord may slip despite having a suitable nominal size.
  • The number of holes does not determine holding strength by itself.
  • A heavy metal cord lock may pull or distort lightweight fabric.
  • A fitted cord end may not pass through a cord-lock channel or eyelet.
  • Metal or plastic appearance alone does not confirm wash or outdoor suitability.
  • Small-part and detachment risks must be assessed separately for children’s products.
  • Complete a sample test with the actual cord before wholesale ordering or mass production.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cord Locks

What does a cord lock or drawstring stopper do?

A cord lock helps adjust the usable length or gathering of a cord and retain it at the selected position.

How do I select the correct cord-lock size?

Measure the outside and lightly compressed diameter of round cord. For flat drawstrings, measure width and thickness separately and compare them with the verified passage.

Is matching the nominal cord and opening size sufficient?

No. Braid density, filler hardness, surface friction and compressibility can change the actual holding performance.

What is the difference between single-hole and double-hole cord locks?

A single-hole model has one shared passage. A double-hole model keeps two cord ends in separate passages. The number of holes does not determine holding strength by itself.

Why does the cord slip through the lock?

The cord may be too narrow, too smooth or too rigid for the selected mechanism. Passage geometry and spring pressure also affect compatibility.

Does a cord lock require a press or setting die?

Standard push-button cord locks are normally installed by hand. Press the button, align the passage and thread the cord through it. A separate tool may be needed for a terminal cord end.

Can a cord lock be used with round elastic?

It may be used when the entry and mechanism are compatible. Because elastic changes diameter under compression and tension, test it with the actual material.

Should I choose a metal or plastic cord lock?

Choose plastic where low weight and colour coordination are priorities. Consider zinc alloy where a visible metal hardware detail is required.

Should the cord lock or cord end be installed first?

If the completed cord end is larger than the lock passage, thread the cord lock first and fit the cord end after completing the cord route.

Are all metal cord locks stainless?

No. The E-Buttons metal cord-lock category consists of zinc-alloy models. Verify the exact finish and intended conditions of use on the individual product page.

Is sample testing required before wholesale production?

Yes. A sample confirms cord passage, holding performance, button movement, component weight, colour and appearance on the finished product.
