What Is Woven Elastic?

Woven elastic is a flat stretch band in which elastic yarns or cores are held inside a narrow warp-and-weft textile structure. The weaving arrangement influences the surface, thickness, width stability and extension behaviour of the completed band.

Woven elastic is widely considered for trousers, tracksuits, skirts, shorts, leggings and pyjama waistbands, but it is not limited to waistband use. Product-specific constructions may also be used for cuffs, footwear, underwear, bags, home textiles, stationery and selected technical sewing applications.

Two woven elastics with the same nominal width may perform differently. Weaving density, elastic-core construction, thickness, surface and finishing processes can change firmness, extension force and recovery.

How Should Woven-Elastic Widths Be Selected?

Elastic width must be evaluated together with the garment section and the clear finished casing dimensions. The following groups are general references; final approval should be based on a sample using the actual fabric and elastic.

A wider elastic is not automatically stronger, firmer or more supportive. Products with the same width may behave differently because of weaving density, thickness and elastic-core construction.

Matching Woven Elastic to a Fabric Casing

A fabric casing is the enclosed channel through which elastic is threaded. Compare the elastic width with the clear internal opening remaining after seam allowances have been completed, rather than the visible outside height.

Is Woven Elastic the Same as Webbing or Woven Tape?

No. Woven elastic contains elastic yarns or cores and is designed to extend and recover. Webbing and woven tape may be non-elastic, limited-stretch or intended for load-carrying applications.

Do not assume that a flat woven-looking band is elastic. Verify the product type, extension and intended application.

What Does Non-Roll Woven Elastic Mean?

Non-roll describes an elastic designed to reduce curling or rotation inside a fabric casing. This behaviour depends on elastic width, thickness, weaving density and the dimensions of the casing.

Not every woven elastic is completely non-roll. An oversized casing, uneven joining seam or unsuitable anchoring may allow a woven band to rotate.

Stretch Percentage, Extension Force and Recovery

Integrated-Drawcord Elastic

How Is Woven Elastic Sewn?

Directly Sewn to Fabric
